Jefferson Community Health Care Centers has recognized the need to address the growing epidemic of obesity in our community, especially in our schools. In the last 20 years, obesity has doubled among children, and tripled among teenagers. In 2007, nearly 1/3 of all children are overweight. 16% of all children are considered obese. Louisiana is number four in the entire country for the highest rate of obesity.
To raise awareness of overweight and obesity as a health problem, and to intervene for those already considered obese, Jefferson Community Health Care Centers has created Shape Up! Shape Up! is a fitness and nutrition program designed to educate children about the health risks they face, obesity related diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, and about ways to prevent and reverse obesity in themselves and their families through healthy lifestyle choices
Mission
Jefferson Community Health Care Centers, Inc. has created the Shape Up! Program to assist the children of Jefferson Parish in making healthy lifestyle choices and maintaining healthy weight management.
